Good-bye to Winter, Hello to Spring

I had to share this video.  Last month, with the last big snow and ice storm, Seattle was off of school of course.  I encouraged her to go out back and play on our long, slope of a backyard, because the ice would make it the best sledding she's ever had.  She did, and, she used her phone to videotape the experience.  So, if you can open this little file, go through the rigamarole to download or update RealPlayer or whatever hoops you have to jump through, you will see a fun video that captures a bright sunny cold day, and Seattle perched at the top of the hill, shadows of trees across the snow, and the shadow of the "snow surfer" herself as she courses down the hill.  You will hear her muffled narration, and be treated to a crystal sparkle blue and white wipe-out! Snowy Wipe-out UPDATE TWO:  I POSTED A NEW LINK FOR THE VIDEO.  TRY THIS ONE ON YOUTUBE.

Although that was fun, I am very glad to welcome Spring.  I put up my "ecological calendar" this morning.  It's the wonderful guide that tells me, for instance, that when I'm standing out at my bus stop in the pitch black morning, I can look up in the sky and identify Jupiter and Mars between the pine bows as I gaze upward.  Or that in the night sky on March 28 and 29 I will be looking at Saturn and bright Regulus next to the moon.

Other rites of Spring are cleaning up my garden by trimming back last year's monarda and fountain grass, pulling weeds, greeting the tulip tips that are poking through.  On March 1st, I declared Spring in my home, and took off the winter bedspread with its deep maroon and green, and botanical appliques, and I took down the white pine bows and strings of pinecones that wound around the high bedposts.  In their place I put the white with ribbon-roses and pearls quilt bedspread, a gauzy scarf across the canopy frame, and pink roses wind along the top frame at the foot of the bed.

And we made cake.  This cake that Mary made is a delightful mark of Spring; it just makes me smile, so I had to share it!  (Well, share how pretty and fun it is.  The cake itself was delicious, but is gone!)

Hi Carrie...The cake looks delicious...so glad you all had fun in the wintery mix...we are totally into mud season on the mountain! I have got Spring fever, bigtime! This coming Saturday Larry and I and Teresa are going to Baltimore for the Youth/Young Adult Pilgrimage through the streets and ending at the newly renovated oldest Cathedral in the United States...The Basilica of the Assumption where will have a blessing of the Palms and Mass. The weather should be FINE! (Pray for a wonderful experience and good weather) Amazingly...is that a word?...I am really looking forward to a walk through the city...even if it is with a gaggle of sophomores in high school. We are going to make an extended stop at the Holy Rosary Church where I taught High School Science for a year. It will be like a walk through my recent past...how cool is that? Have a wonderful week...no snow!
Anyone up for a 2.8 mile walk through Baltimore...any takers?
    Love to you all,
    Carol
