Sleeping in Today

When a very hot, muggy August day gives way to a very cool night, moisture from the steamy earth rises into that cool air and makes ground fog.  It’s a pretty effect of “clouds on the ground” that I enjoy.  I observed this effect one morning this month as I drove past fields and mountains on the way to work in the early morning, and this is what I thought:

Usually, she’d be up by now, bright-eyed and stretching wide over the expanse of Earth.

But Mother Nature’s sleeping in today.

I’ve seen her fluffy white blankets covering the fields and hollows where she snuggles against the warmth of the Earth.

She doesn’t seem to mind that we commuters catch a glimpse of her in her bed clothes or thrill to the lace of her petticoats brushing over the mountains as she rises for the day.

I love the clouds on the ground. My son and I stayed at a wonderful campsite high in the North Carolina mountains this summer, and clouds would literally pour through our summit abode, cascading down into the valley and leaving us wet with their humidity. It was a visual treat.

Thank you for your wonderful reminder of nature's beauty.
